FAQ About Covid-19 and Keeping Your Theming Clean

Preventing the spread of germs and limiting common touchpoints is a hot topic right now. Luckily, IDS theming is easier to keep clean than you may think! Not only are our products perfectly suited to regular cleaning in a clinical setting, but they are resistant to fading and scuffing.

FAQ ABOUT COVID-19 AND KEEPING YOUR THEMING CLEAN

Easy to Clean 3D Products

Regular soap and water solution is all you need to clean our products – which also neutralizes the Coronavirus! It’s really that easy. Check out the video to see the science behind the destructive virus-killing power of soap.

If you need to sanitize your products beyond what soap can do, we have also tested a variety of medical-grade cleaners such as ED Everyday DisinfectantCavicide, and a bleach & water solution with no damage to our products.

Regardless of what cleaning product you may use, we want you to have confidence that your creations from IDS will stay looking fresh for a long time. We always recommend cleaning with a damp sponge or cloth and a light touch (no scrubbing required here!)

Easy to Clean Wall Murals

Wall murals are just as easy to clean as a regular painted wall. Again, no special cleaning supplies are necessary. Gently spot clean messes or high traffic areas with soap and water using a soft sponge or cloth.

Our selection of I Spy Murals offers hands-free entertainment in the form of a scavenger hunt! Each mural comes with a list of items hidden within the scenery, just waiting to be uncovered. It is a great way to capture a child’s imagination, and parents appreciate that they don’t need to resort to screen time to keep the kiddos occupied.

Our I Spy Murals have seen a burst in popularity in hospital treatment rooms as a great solution to keep kids entertained while providing hands-free fun and colorful decor in an otherwise drab space.

FAQ: How Can IDS Help Solve Common Hospital Design Challenges

AI is Just a Tool – Our Artists Bring the Magic

Dr. Michael Lateiner Interview: Adding Theming to Increase Profitability and Patient Satisfaction

One of the main benefits of IDS office theming is how it can help you grow your business faster. IDS has themed over 300 offices and more than 30% of our clients have come back to theme a second (or third, or seventh) additional office. Theming has brought them success and allowed them to expand, adding more theming or opening additional locations. This is the story of one of those successful clients.

“In 5 years we became a multi-million dollar office and we attribute a huge amount of our success to IDS.”

Small Start – Big Results

In 2010, Dr. Michael Lateiner came to IDS to add theming to the reception area in his small dental office. His goal was to create a fun space for his patients and to increase the number of patients the practice saw. Focusing on the reception area, he began with a few murals, desk cladding, and a children’s play area.

iDr. Lateiner knew his theming was a great way to connect with kids, but he didn’t yet realize its true potential; his office now had a competitive edge that was memorable, shareable, and drew in kids and parents alike.

Stage 1 of theming in 2010.

Expanding in Popularity

The popularity of Dr. Lateiner’s themed office grew over the next 5 years, increasing his profits and giving him the funds necessary to take over the neighboring office space. He removed the adjoining wall and expanded his treatment area and the reception to make room for even more patients.

With a newly expanded space, Dr. Lateiner was ready for additional theming to help further grow his practice. In 2016 IDS added murals, a photo op, a themed brushing station, and even theming in the x-ray room – more than double what had been installed years before.

Stage 2 of theming – expanding into a larger floor space.

“We hoped IDS theming would provide a 10X return on our investment and, well, our expectations have been exceeded.”

Doubling Down on Theming

In 2017, only a year after Dr. Lateiner’s previous project, he and his wife, Dr. Gloria Fulman, began construction on a new office. They immediately contacted IDS to plan a fully themed office.

“We were so happy with the results from our first office that we had the confidence to open a second one. This time we gave IDS complete creative freedom.”

Concept sketch drawn by the IDS Team.

IDS created travel themed decor, featuring caricatures of a young Michael and Gloria adventuring around the world. Extensive murals, photo ops, and brushing stations transformed this office into a kid-friendly environment that parents and patients love.

“Patients come into the office and are immediately comfortable. The parents can’t stop taking pictures.”

New office installation.

“IDS has the whole package. Their creations help make our patients comfortable, happy, and excited to visit us. This, in turn, creates happy parents who are now more willing to bring their children regularly. The end results allow us to provide better dental care to our patients while ensuring the practice grows profitably.”

5 Tips to Prepare Your Waiting Room for the New Normal

As practice and clinic owners begin focusing their attention on reopening, we rounded up a few tips we thought you might find helpful.

For a more in-depth checklist on how to keep you, your staff, and your patients safe, check out this great article by AAPD. Most importantly, check with your local, state, and federal governments and implement any required regulations for reopening your practices.

5 WAYS YO MAKE YOUR WAITING ROOM SAFER DURING THE COVID PANDEMIC

1. Revise Your Waiting Area Seating Arrangement

There are many options to consider, so do what works best for your space. Some options include removing chairs, adding curtains/sheets between seats, or spreading your chairs out into unused areas/rooms if you have the space to accommodate. If you see kids in your practice, consider arranging chairs in ‘pods’ to accommodate the patient, a parent, and possibly a sibling. If you have IDS benches or other connected seating options, consider marking designated seats to help patients keep their distance from one another.

2. The Less People in the Waiting Room, the Better

If you want to eliminate non-essential personnel in the building, ask patients and their families to wait/fill out any paperwork in their car. Call or text them on their cell phones when you are ready for them to come in. You can ask that any additional family members remain in the car if possible, to avoid overcrowding the waiting room or treatment area.

3. Reduce the Number of Interactive Touchpoints

Reduce the number of patient interaction touchpoints. For example, wipe downs pens and credit card machines between patients and lessen pen/form transfers through contactless solutions, such as emailing receipts.

4. Help Maintain the Distance

Use floor stickers to encourage your patients to allow proper social distancing from front of house staff and other patients waiting inside. To help with this, IDS has created a variety of floor stickers based on our most popular themes, available for you to order a cost.

Go to idskids.com or call 1-888-884-4102 to request social distancing floor stickers for your office.

5. Eliminate Unnecessary Contact Points

Reduce the number of contact points in your waiting room. Mark play areas off-limits and turn off video game consoles; take away any magazines or toys that you would normally provide to your patients to help pass the time.

10 Halloween Dental Office Ideas for Pediatric Practices

5 Tips for Creating the Waiting Room Experience Parents Really Want (But Won’t Tell You!)

What is it that parents really want when they bring their kids in for treatment? Aside from positive clinical outcomes and healthy teeth – which we can assume is the number one priority for both you and them – there is something that every parent secretly hopes they get while bringing their family to your office…

A mini vacation.

Now hear us out. They won’t tell you this, but every parent is thinking the same thing when they enter your office. It goes something like this: “Please let this be easy because I really hope I can relax for a few minutes while my kids are occupied and I have no other demands on my attention.”

It’s akin to being on an airplane – for a block of time you can disconnect and sneak in some ‘me time’ while the demands of everyday life can wait. It’s not the primary purpose of being there, but it sure is an enjoyable perk when it happens.

Understanding this secret wish of parents offers a great opportunity for any healthcare provider who works with young families. It’s an opportunity to deliver a beyond-expectation experience that gets parents talking and helps fuel referral rates. Relaxed parents, cooperative patients, happy staff, growing practice – everyone wins.

HERE ARE 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE SURE PARENTS FEEL WELCOME IN YOUR PRACTICE:

1. Take Parents’ Stress Away by Making Their Kids Feel Welcome

Make their kids feel welcome immediately by engaging with them as soon as they enter your office. Welcome them by name whenever possible and make them feel like the star of the show. This helps reduce appointment anxiety in your younger patients and allows them to feel more comfortable being separated from their mom or dad.

Also, it’s a great primer for a smooth treatment because appointments are easier for your staff when patients feel at ease.

Going the extra mile to make kids feel welcome.

2. Create an Entertaining Area in Your Waiting Room that is Just For Kids

Create a special space that is inviting for kids – one that is clearly just for them where they can have fun, be fully engaged in a healthy distraction and not worry about interrupting the adults. This creates the opportunity for mom and dad to relax, instead of adding the pressure of having to entertain a child while in a space that doesn’t feel kid-friendly.

A private play area for kids.

3. Create a Distraction for Siblings so Parents Can Relax

Think about the experience parents have with the assumption that they will arrive with two kids – the one who has a scheduled appointment and a sibling. Construct your experience around the child that will be spending time in your waiting room beyond simply waiting to be called back. Videos games and physical activities like slides are a good distraction. So are movie theaters and TVs. Make sure your space goes the distance to keep them happy and engaged for 30-45 minutes.

Video games make a great distraction for siblings in the waiting room.

4.  Provide Amenities to Help Enhance the Waiting Room Experience

For some, a relaxing time may mean using their mobile device. And that’s ok – embrace it by having a charging station with common phone charges available and reliable Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi is especially important for Canadians, where cellular data is often expensive and rationed closely, making Wi-Fi a must.

5. Pamper Parents with a Spa Treatment

Now that you’ve created an exclusive space just for kids, encourage parents to use this time to relax while their kids are being entertained.  Consider upgrading your waiting room treats to include gourmet coffee and teas, premium chocolates, fresh fruit, or some other delectable snack that makes their time in your space special.

Taking a break while the kids are preoccupied.

Indulging in an unexpected treat is a great way to feel mentally refreshed. If you want to take your waiting room experience to the highest level, a massage chair or other spa-like touches for mom or dad could be just what the doctor ordered.

A next level spa treatment if you want to go to the extreme.

The Winning Formula: Happy Kids, Relaxed Parents, and Exceptional Dental Care

It’s a simple formula, really. First, make a special space and a welcoming experience for junior patients. This takes the tension out of what can otherwise be a high-stress situation for both the kids and parents alike. That then opens the door for you to easily deliver a beyond-expectation experience for mom and dad – one that is a pleasant surprise, but exactly what every parent has secretly been hoping for all along.

How to Use Technology to Help Your Dental Practice in 2024

Patterson Today Features an IDS Underwater Office

One of our underwater themed clients was featured in Patterson Today, an online publication by Patterson Dental. The article does a great job of showing off their impressive new office!

Here’s an expert from the article where Dr. Healy of Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry talks about the undersea theme we created for this amazing office:

As many doctors are doing with new spaces, Healy wanted to create a practice that didn’t feel sterile. He wanted it to be a fun place where both parents and children could feel comfortable and excited about dental care. Ultimately, it got him more excited about dental care, too.

“You’ll catch me out there playing with the kids more than I probably should be,” he said, laughing. “You have to think like a kid sometimes. So often, kids go to a doctor’s office and it’s not very inviting. Naturally, you know how they’re going to feel. They’re going to be anxious when they come to the back.”

“To give the illusion of being underwater, the walls of the practice are covered in murals with waves and sea life, and there’s even a pirate ship. The results have been amazing,” Healy said. “People often come in for their appointment, and then come in again the next day to take a picture. It’s worked to help keep his patients happy, and their parents engaged.”

“As a parent, if my kid really likes going somewhere, I’m going to keep taking my kid there,”

“I’ve had a lot of patients that drive by and see it and they say, ‘My son or daughter wants to come here because of seeing this.’ It’s a built–in advertisement of what services I have to offer, and if you have something that no one else has, people want to come there.”

Congrats to the whole team at Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. Read the rest of the article from Patterson Today

Interview with Dr. Diya Chadha – Kids Won’t Even Know They’re At The Dentist

Dr. Diya Chadha is the co-owner of 3 IDS offices, including one with jungle office decor and an undersea office.

Watch the video to see a tour the beach themed office decor.

Tour the Best Beach Themed Medical Office

IDS: How did your new IDS beach dental office change the perception of your patients?

Dr. Chadha: Having our offices themed by IDS was probably the best decision we ever made. The colors and the decor and the theming makes the office so much more friendly and welcoming and half the time the kids don’t even realize they’re at a dentist’s office. They think it’s a play center or a positive, fun environment for them, so it was definitely the best decision we ever made.

IDS: Do you think the parents feel more relaxed bringing their kids because of the theming?

Dr. Chadha: Oh absolutely. I can’t tell you how many times we had parents come in and say, “Well, can I be a patient here?”, “This is so fun” or they say, “How come I never had anything like this when I was growing up?” So it definitely does attract the parents and makes them more comfortable knowing that this office is catered to their children.

IDS: Would you recommend IDS to other businesses that deal with children?

Dr. Chadha: I think IDS is a necessity now. It’s necessary for offices dealing with children to provide an environment that is gonna be fun and friendly and relieve any anxiety that the children may have. So it’s a definite yes.

IDS: How do you feel about the quality of the product?

Dr. Chadha: I think the quality’s excellent. We’ve put the quality to the test and we’ve had kids running and jumping and pulling on things and you know what? Its stood the test of time and so far so good. So I would say it’s top notch.

IDS: Has your practice increased due to passersby? People seeing the theming, coming in, and checking it out?

Dr. Chadha: People are always intrigued. They walk by and they see this very unusual, friendly, fun looking place and a lot of kids think it’s a play center. So just that mystery about what it is, is enough to attract the attention for people to come in to see what the office is all about.

IDS: If you could plan a whole new office, what kind of theme do you think you would go for?

Dr. Chadha: Ooh, that’s a tough one and I have thought about it because I’m ready to do another fun office! I like the barn theme, so some barn animals and other fun critters, I think that would be fun.

IDS: If you could get IDS to make anything, sky’s the limit, what would get them to add to this office?

Dr. Chadha: Some giant character on the roof! And a car to match my office, that’s what I’d like.

Dr. Chadha is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where she received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Her passion for providing a positive dental experience to each child she treats is always evident, and she brings a mother’s touch to her care.

Interview with Dr. Karim Kanani – The Benefits of a Change in Atmosphere

Hear from Dr. Karim Kanani about how the atmosphere has changed in his offices since he added jungle and underwater themed murals and 3D from IDS.

My name is Dr. Karim Kanani I am co-owner of SmileTown Dentistry. We have 3 locations themed by IDS.

Our first office is a jungle themed office. We have added a lot of murals and 3D artwork. When the patients come into our location, they are immersed in a jungle themed environment, which is a very entertaining and non-threatening area, as opposed to a regular dental office.

Tour Through a Jungle Dental Office

Our second location is underwater themed. It is very calming. Kids are automatically put at ease once they first enter.

Tour Breathtaking Underwater Dental Office Decor

IDS: What do you feel the difference that this office theming has made on the atmosphere?

Dr. Kanani: Upon theming our office with IDS we realized the office atmosphere had changed a lot in terms of our patients. When they come into the office they were really amazed as to how the atmosphere had made it really friendly. By doing the theming from IDS we realized that it changed their attitude and their perception of what they see and feel when they come to a dental office.

IDS: Do you feel that the reaction of your patients when they come to you is a lot more easygoing now that you have theming?

Dr. Kanani: Yes, I feel like when the parents and the patients first enter into the office, they get a sense that this is not your regular dental office, it’s themed, it’s very fun and entertaining. So when they do meet me at the end of the hallway, they are already put into quite a relaxing mood.

IDS: Do you feel that your employees have gotten into the theme and enjoyed the work environment?

Dr. Kanani: Our employees love this space because it’s very relaxing for the patients. The colors are very vibrant so the kids feel like they’re in an amusement park and it really puts everyone into a good mood when they come into the office to get work done.

IDS: Has your practice increased in foot traffic or just from people hearing about the theme?

Dr. Kanani: I would say that the patient flow has increased quite a bit from people who are just walking by our office, as they do look inside. They see all the murals and the 3D artwork and they’re very curious as to what’s going on, so a lot of them will just come into the office directly and find out what this place is. At first, they think it’s an amusement park of some sort, but once they find out it’s a dental office for kids, they are quite surprised.

Reception area with amazing coral front desk that welcomes patients.

IDS: How do you feel about the quality of the product and the whole experience of dealing with IDS?

Dr. Kanani: Our experience with working with IDS has been excellent, they were a great source of knowledge in helping us design all our theming features, as well as the quality and craftsmanship of their work has been excellent. It’s very, very top-notch. All the murals, all the 3D artwork, it’s professionally done and we’re extremely happy with our product.

IDS: What’s your personal favorite part of your office?

Dr. Kanani: My personal favorite part of the underwater office would probably be the waiting area, where we have the 3D coral reef along with the windows and our mascot, the pug there, looks like it’s underwater. All the patients and parents come in and usually their first word is “wow!”. I like the “wow” factor.

In the jungle office we have a built-in theater room. We have kids movies running all day long. What this does is allows the kids to be in a relaxed environment as they’re waiting for their dental appointments and also again, put them at ease. The parents really love it too as well because they can have their other kids that are not being treated also relax in that area while their other kids are being treated.

Whether Your Office is Big or Small, IDS Can Theme It All

No matter what size space you want to theme, the benefits of a kid-friendly space in dental or medical offices are always the same. Your practice will become more welcoming for young families, and the kids will have fun and be less anxious while in your care. Happy parents will rave about your office, and through their word-of-mouth advertising, more families will come looking for a similar experience.

Read on for a few ways to take your space from mundane to magical! Or skip to ideas for:

Themed Decor for a Small Office

For offices where space is a precious commodity, start your theming with wall murals. Murals are a great way to inject some fun into a space and require zero footprint to do so. Murals aren’t limited to just your walls; our colorful graphics can be applied to check-in counters, doors, cabinetry, windows, company vehicles, and more!

Check out this undersea office decor. It takes up no additional room than your normal cabinets and mirrors would.

Our custom murals are expertly curated to fit any space, taking any permanent fixture into consideration – light switches, outlets, doorways, etc. You’ll never have to worry about a cute character’s face being covered up by the thermostat!

And if you have no open wall space… don’t forget about your windows!

If you’d like to have some 3D elements in your office, but you’re worried about them taking up too much space, we recommend products like brushing mirrors or themed benches that replace their ‘regular’ counterparts. This combination results in an exciting office with zero extra space required.

If you’re looking for characters, a few smaller critters can fit into your normal decor and create a lot of humour. Like this thieving raccoon and peeping squirrel.

Do you have a smaller office space or a smaller budget? Why not download a PDF of our Product Guide and check out the budget-friendly products we have available in our Essentials Collection.

You’ll find examples of murals, brushing mirrors, benches and more in our 6 most popular themes, including jungle, underwater, safari, beach, woodland, and space.

Themed Decor for a Medium Office

If you’ve got a little more room to play, your options open up even more. In addition to our recommendations for a smaller office, themed kid’s corners and play areas are among our most popular designs. You can add in some gaming stations for a variety of ages, while creating “share-worthy” photo ops that are a perfect addition to your social media feed. These extras can really enhance the experience kids have while visiting your office.

Depending on your location and exterior space available, you could also consider a character sitting on a bench outside of your practice. Our designs are built to last and can withstand outdoor elements, no matter your geographical location, from snowy winters to sunny summers.

Exterior photo ops make for great landmarks, which not only saves space inside, but also helps make your practice easier to find from the outside. Inquisitive passers-by will likely wander into your practice, curious to know more about the services you offer.

Themed Decor for a Large Office

If you are lucky enough to have a large space, this is where the IDS team can really roll up their sleeves and help you create an unforgettable experience for your patients. As your patients move from the front of the office to the back, we can help you to enhance your theme and tell a story that keeps them engaged throughout their entire visit.

With more space comes more opportunities to get creative with your theming, such as a large-scale sculpture in your waiting area, or 3D cladding for your front desk.

You can add theming elements like ceiling characters to your treatment rooms and open bay, or deck out your waiting area with cladded benches or characters “waiting” for their own appointments. The trick is creating a space that isn’t just a room with a TV, but a secret world created just for your younger patients.

Theater rooms are also popular to keep kids occupied for longer, especially when waiting for a sibling to finish their appointment. They can be fun and educational areas.

Big or small, theming can help you to squeeze extra value out of your physical space. Our clients often describe it as a win-win-win investment – patients and their families have more fun while in your care, staff report that appointments are easier and they enjoy working in a unique environment, and the space helps to fuel positive reviews from parents which helps to accelerate the growth of the practice.

IDS is committed to helping you invest in the future success of your practice. The only question is, what kind of themed office decor can we create for you?

FAQ: How Can IDS Help Solve Common Hospital Design Challenges

AI is Just a Tool – Our Artists Bring the Magic

How to Theme Your Space on a Budget

Theming an entire office can be a daunting prospect financially, especially if you’re a new grad or if you’ve just opened your first business. But trust us when we say we have something for everyone – and something for all budgets. All of our themed elements are custom built so prices vary depending on design, scope, and complexity. We have created themed spaces from $5,000 to over $800,000. Each design, big or small, serves the same purpose: relaxing your patients and increasing new patient referrals.

Explore Your Financing Options

Not all of our clients just have $100,000 burning a hole in their pocket. The majority finance their theming through local funders. IDS products can be included in your building cost, which makes talking to your bank easy. Bank of America has been a fan of IDS for years and specializes in loans for dentists.

Adding theming into your marketing budget can work as well. After all, theming has proven to be more helpful at gaining new patients than traditional advertising such as newspaper ads, TV commercials, and radio spots.

Try Our Pre-Designed Murals in Our Essentials Collection

If you’re only going to do one thing to transform your space add murals! Those on a budget can check out our pre-designed murals for a more affordable mural option. Murals are a great place to start your theming, and the murals from our Essentials Collection make that even easier to do.

Some other products for the Essentials Collection

Dr. Joe Nguyen became a customer of ours many years ago by starting out with a couple of our pre-designed products. He has since expanded into 2 new offices with fully immersive floor to ceiling themes.

“I wanted to start small with my first office so I put a few pieces in certain areas [a mural and 2 brushing mirrors]. For my second office, I went all out with a completely WOW kid’s play area and put murals and some custom 3D in lots of the treatment rooms.

Next, I will be expanding the theming in my first office and I plan on doing another fully themed IDS office that will be super cool. I can’t wait. I love IDS. It is so much fun to work with them and I would love to do this all the time!”

We are continuing to add to our line of pre-designed murals. Our newest addition is a line of stylish contemporary murals – perfect for offices that see a variety of patients, both young and old.

Stay on Budget with Multi-Stage Theming

You can also consider multi-stage theming – get your favorite pieces now and do a second install later as your budget allows. We have seen a number of clients use this option successfully and theme in stages according to their budget and circumstances. Start in the reception area and add to the treatment area later, or add a gaming tablet before adding a whole play area. Do what works best for you.

If you’re a new grad who wants theming but is just starting out then we recommend theming in stages as well. You can start small with murals, a brushing mirror, and even a photo op to help promote your business. We’ll be ready to add more when you are! We can even draw sketches for your office with a final stage in mind so you know that your early theming will fit your expansion as you continue to theme.

An important aspect to remember about IDS theming is that our murals and 3D sculptures are built to last. Old pieces will stand the test of time and look great next to new additions, allowing you to have a cohesive look as you expand.

Our steel-reinforced props are hard coated with the toughest and most durable protective coating in the industry. It flexes with the weight of active kids and stands up to their abuse. Our 3M murals are made of the same material used on graphic vehicle wraps. If it can handle rocks on the highway it can handle kids!

Check out 2 of our clients who did multi-stage theming. Here’s what they thought of this option.

Dr. Morgan, who started small on his first office out of school, and Dr. Lateiner, who expanded his office space and his theming along with it.

“As a relatively new residency graduate, I decided to theme my office in two stages. I had just purchased a long-standing, successful pediatric dental office but was still budget-conscious. Dave and his team at IDS made the entire process from start to finish incredibly easy. He guided me towards what would be most cost-effective but would also give the most dramatic first impression for my patients seeing the office for the first time. Therefore, my new patients were able to experience an exciting office from day one.

My first phase consisted of my reception desk and murals. The murals allowed for maximal coverage while not over-extending my initial budget.

Less than one year later we started sketches for my second phase which consisted of a custom tablet game tower, murals, faux windows, Chew on This, as well as some custom 3D wall art.

I would recommend IDS and multi-staging their office theming project to any budget-conscious dentist and am very happy with my results. IDS will most definitely theme my second office!”

– Dr. Bryan Morgan

“I wasn’t planning on opening my second stage for a few more years but things were going so well that when space opened up next door, we jumped on it. We’re not only thrilled with the return we’ve received, but we’ve already booked future projects with IDS.

All of our expectations have been exceeded and we can attribute a large amount of our success to our IDS design. Working with IDS has been an amazing experience – the best part of building both of my practices!”

– Dr. Michael Lateiner
